href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Vinyl_chloride\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">vinyl chloride<\/a>, derailed and exploded in the town of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/East_Palestine,_Ohio\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">East Palestine, Ohio<\/a>, United States.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/2023_Ohio_train_derailment#cite_note-guardian-1\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">[1]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The derailment caused a fire that lasted for several days. On February 6, to prevent further explosions, emergency crews managed the fire into a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Controlled_burn\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">controlled burn<\/a>&nbsp;which allowed for a monitored, gradual release of burning toxic chemicals. The burn released&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hydrogen_chloride\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">hydrogen chloride<\/a>&nbsp;and the highly toxic&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Phosgene\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">phosgene<\/a>&nbsp;into the air.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/2023_Ohio_train_derailment#cite_note-guardian-1\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">[1]<\/a><\/sup>&nbsp;A massive emergency response by agencies from three states began and led to the mandatory evacuation of residents within a 1&nbsp;mi (1.6&nbsp;km) radius.
