An unlikely patriot. That’s me. In 8th grade, I started refusing to stand for the pledge of allegiance at school. First of all, it was school and school existed to break my will. But even more, in the 60’s, post WW2 fascism still dominated. I was a true individualist. I have deplored the Flag worship that has sometimes been a tool for unhealthy nationalism. That was then, this is now. For my friends on fb (now deactivated), I wrote a explanation of Liberty with the idea some might understand why we need a free America. Not that it didn’t fall on deaf ears. Now here I am, a patriot and a moralist. I joked with my sister about how unlikely it is for me to talk about subjective morals. What the right thing to do is morally can be debated. What is wrong is clear. There’s a lot of morally wrongness in the world today. It needs to be called out and exposed. So for me, it’s 1775 in America. There is clear right and wrong. Patriots stand up for what’s right.
