I made a conscious effort to smile at every person that I encountered. I must have encountered 40 people on the trail. A few had masks on, but the vast majority did not. Seems like everyone was just trying to take in the crisp cool fall air. (We Texans love our crisp cool fall days because it seems like there are so few of them.) I noticed that almost every person, at whom, I smiled returned the smile without hesitating. It occurred to me that a smile is like the most wonderful infectious virus that you can catch. It is a gift from God to show our affection to others, but unlike hugs, kisses, and holding hands, a smile can be shared with a COMPLETE STRANGER. So go ahead and put your mask on if you deem it necessary. I won’t stop you. I do not feel that I am well-versed enough in the size of virus particles and what will or will not pass through various types of masks to carry on an intelligent discussion as to why they don’t work. Frankly, I do not think that I should have to. I can tell you, without a doubt, what will NOT pass through that mask. It is your smile. Your smile gets trapped in there with the spit droplets, bacteria and carbon dioxide. The smile, and all of the love, happiness and peace that it conveys stays behind your mask-never to find it’s way out. Seems like kind of an unexpected side-effect of this whole mask situation. Or is it unexpected? I have my doubts. Thanks for reading.
