Yeah I ran this by a friend of mine who works in the field. They agreed it is indeed odd. Turns out the sequence in the 8th chromosome in a non-coding region, but is also in a coding region in the 13th chromosome. What is also odd is how the reverse sequence is NOT included in the primer, which is to be expected. Also, coronavirus is an RNA virus, but this is a DNA sequence. To confuse matters more, the CDC has a different protocol that does have primer sequences that actually make sense (both forward and reverse). This is available here: https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/downloads/rt-pcr-panel-primer-probes.pdf

So it’s not clear to me whether the WHO protocol is used in the US along with the CDC protocol? At this point some more research is in order to try to get a handle on the oddities.
