I don’t believe that any person or group of people in power (old, old money) are going to give their power and privilege away without a fight and so of course their helpers, like newspaper barons and journalists, who are losing readership and therefore income, will do all they can to squash financial and narrative competition. That is no different to oil barons suppressing news about alternative fuels and arranging for bribes or the death of any resisting inventors.

I imagine that a very long list of those with dissenting views has been collected over the years when people were believing they weren’t been monitored and that free speech had at last come. Now having collected all that vital info the bosses can clamp down. I read once that the word gossip was based in the King sending a servant to the local ale house to “go sip” with the commoners in order to find out what they were saying and thinking. Next day the spy would report back to the king who would then just “disappear” certain people.

Yet even if the internet remained unhindered, our documents, for example, birth certificates among them, will increasingly become digital, our video footage as well, and thus become easier to fake, presumably. Soon, perhaps, it may be impossible to verify the authenticity of any two-dimensional presentation or of any paper printout thereof — necessary instead, ironically, to judge veracity by old fashioned hunch and horse sense, i.e. by the distance between words and actions.

Yet we are not equally endowed with this innate capacity to recognize truth, even when presented to us self evidently as such — let alone to act upon it — honorably. Liberals, in the main, are no less inundated by information or by truth than the rest of us; but they do seem far more resistant to it. And the very worst actors among us are often quite adept at discerning truth; they’re just incapable of growing from it, inclined rather to exploit it.

Every effort ought be made of course to defend our freedom of speech on the internet and elsewhere. But the very flood of information the internet has provided, and the proliferation of sources thereof — Q, T, Fox, RT, AIM — have rendered even the truth seeker’s chances of finding and maintaining a solid foothold all the more fleeting. Thankfully, those of us who grew up without this worldwide web can attest to an existence of free speech and a free exchange of ideas without it.
